The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
