The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
