The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
