The Discovery in the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
