England have chosen a twelve-player selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.

Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Weighed

Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.

However the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
