A significant industrial complex located in the suburbs of the capital is dealing with radioactive pollution following a government team found traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities inside the area, which includes companies shipping chilled seafood.

Urgent Response and Goods Recall

The finding has led to immediate cleanup efforts and the relocation of nearby inhabitants, coming after a similar pollution scare in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.

A major international retailer is among the companies that have recalled products from their shelves following the finding.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities initiated an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of chilled breaded prawns exported by a local firm.

The FDA released an advisory instructing suppliers and retailers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, although the detected amount was far below the agency's action threshold. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern following longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through consumption of polluted food or liquid over time) is an elevated chance of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radioactivity tests revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one additional production facilities, but said they would immediately undergo cleanup procedures conducted by the country's nuclear agency.

The environment minister declared that residents residing in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was cleaned, adding that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health authorities also conducted examinations on nearby employees and people located close to the manufacturing estate, identifying nine individuals who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a hospital before being allowed to return home.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The affected sites will immediately receive decontamination procedures by the national atomic energy institute. Authorities have also designated the area of a scrap metal factory as an containment facility for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which operates no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.

Origin of Contamination and Trade Limits

A taskforce spokesperson told the media that recycled metal shipments were the probable cause of pollution and confirmed the government would immediately enforce limits on scrap metal arrivals. He said that transport were additionally being inspected for possible contamination as they moved through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Public Risks

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that typically enters the ecosystem as a consequence of atomic testing or accidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chornobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, products and the atmosphere.

The level found in the frozen shrimp was far lower than regulatory intervention levels, but the agency explained prolonged contact to even small amounts of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.

The recalled shrimp was sold at major store locations across at least a dozen American states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
