New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
