National Guardsman Recovering Following Sustaining Gunshot Wounds in Washington DC
A member of the National Guard is on the mend after he was critically injured in an ambush-style shooting last month in Washington DC.
The parents of the 24-year-old soldier, 24, report "the injury to his head is slowly healing and that he's starting to 'look more like himself,'" stated West Virginia Governor the governor.
The soldier's relatives anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the coming fortnight, and they feel hopeful about his progress, according to the official's statement.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of a pair of West Virginia National Guard members shot when a shooter opened fire in proximity to the White House on November 26th. His fellow guardsmember, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her wounds.
"We continue to ask all state residents and the nation's citizens for their prayers!" the governor said.
The governor attended a vigil on last Friday night for Staff Sgt Wolfe at Musselman High School in his hometown, where the guardsman was once a pupil.
A clergyman at the event shared a message from the soldier's parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe.
"It is clear to us that there is a difficult journey to go," they expressed, as reported by regional media Metro News.
"But our belief keeps us optimistic. We remain thankful for the prayers and the encouragement from people all over the globe."
Earlier in the week, the governor said Staff Sgt Wolfe had responded to a nurse with a thumbs-up and was able to wiggle his feet.
Law enforcement have charged the alleged gunman, an individual from Afghanistan named the suspect, with premeditated homicide and attempted murder.
Prior to his arrival to the US in two years ago, he was once a counterterrorism soldier in a CIA-backed unit that worked with American troops in the South Asian nation.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of 2,000 National Guard members whom President Donald Trump deployed to the Washington DC in August as part of his policy initiative in urban centers.
Following the incident, Trump said he desired another 500 military personnel sent to the nation's capital.
The Trump administration has also referenced the shooting as a reason for further immigration crackdown measures.
They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from a list of nations that were part of a entry restriction implemented over the recent season, including the suspect's home country.
