Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He fought justice and the law prevailed.
Two months following being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally seems jail-bound.
Expected Imprisonment
The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been under home confinement in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amidst mounting rumors that he will be moved to a infamous top-security prison.
Historical Remarks on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former military man showed little compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we provide those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get messed, period. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up in prison, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or theft.”
Jail Location Discussion
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week visited the complex in an obvious effort to discourage the supreme court from sending him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he predicted the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the condition of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells holding 40 inmates: “That is almost one square meter per inmate.
“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.
Backers Speak Out
The senator isn't the only voice speaking out ahead of the former president’s anticipated incarceration.
Penning in a major publication, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest political injustice in its past”.
“This is an injustice that eats away the hearts of many of Brazilians,” he stated.
Divided Public Reaction
It is possibly correct due to the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of millions other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for plotting to block the elected leader from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent administration's allied group, said: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain proper care – but proper treatment behind bars. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time celebrating the tough treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties are not for criminals – opted to visit a penitentiary to discover what situations are actually like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning treatment”.
Potential Prison Conditions
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 detainees, his expected destination looks to be a adjacent prison for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning official residence, around 12 miles away.
Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and also a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” sources indicated.
Ideological Responses
Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
