Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • An identical bonus for winning the ROY honor.

The contract also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a emerging lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, surpassing the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The very next day in the title match against the USA, he blasted a tying shot in the early innings, helping Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
