A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Sailboats Listed Lost following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and rescue mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats loaded with aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Search Missions Deployed
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine total personnel, according to a official statement.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to the Island
The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission commented.
The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Mission
Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and food.
Wider Political Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Political tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from several leaders emphasizing the complicated state of bilateral relations.
Responding to certain proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to find the vessels and secure the safety of the people on board.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
